LABORATORY PROCEDURES FOR PLANT CELL VIRUSES

  REFERENCE NO.: PVC/1998/2.00

TITLE: ACCESSION OF VIRUS INFECTED PLANT MATERIAL

INTRODUCTION

The Plant Virus Collection is continually expanded by the process of accessioning new plant virus material which is usually done at request of the Plant Virus Collection. The Plant Virus Collection maintains scientifically relevant viruses and, especially, viruses which are of current economic importance. For this reason, the collection centre requests or accepts not only well described plant virus materials but also plants infected with tentatively identified or hitherto undescribed viruses causing considerable harvest losses.

PROCEDURE

A standard letter (PVC/1998/2.00 Appendix 2 or PVC/1998/2.00 Appendix 3) together with a blank Accession Form (PVC/1998/2.00 Appendix 5) is sent to the potential depositor inviting inclusion of a plant virus isolate into the Collection. The potential depositor is requested to return the completed accession form to the collection at the time the plant virus material is dispatched.

On arrival of plant material and accession form

 - Plant material and accession form are forwarded to the responsible scientist who will treat virus infected plant materials as appropriate.

- Date of arrival, depositor, isolate designation, and supposed scientific name of the virus are entered into the Plant Virus Collection database (PVC/1998/2.00 Appendix 6).

- A file is generated by the responsible scientist which contains all documents about the virus infected material, all correspondence from and to the depositor and any other relevant information.

- A standard letter (PVC/1998/2.00 Appendix 7) is sent to the depositor to acknowledge the receipt of virus infected plant material and - if necessary - ask for the completed accession form.
